| Campus Plaza, in front of the student cafeteria, is an oasis of waterways,
while the open spaces of Academic Plaza, between the University Library
and the Main Lecture Building, is a favorite spot for conversation and
relaxation. Three sculptures by renowned Kumamoto artists decorate these
plazas, making them creative spaces that symbolize the University.

Sculpture "Sora" (Sky)
By Shiyo Kodama. Expressing a balance of the materialistic culture (columns)
and spiritual culture (sphere), the work reveals the entreaty of youth
to extend their infinite potential to space.

Sculpture "Daichi" (Earth)
By Shiyo Kodama. Expresses a contrast of tension and stability, through
a fusion of nature and civilization. The themes are natural power and energy,
such as the earth and water.

Wall Mosaic in Lobby of Main Lecture Building
Entitled "Rentai" (Solidarity), this granite mosaic was created by
Akira Sakata, after two oil paintings by Kumamoto artist Zenzo Sakamoto
on the same subject: "Hito to Hito" (Man with Man) and "Hito to Shizen
" (Man with Nature).

front of Foreign Language Education Center
Sculpture "Oval Column"
By Akinobu Matsuo. Modeled after horsetail grass, the work expresses the
development of youth. The 32 faces of the polyhedron on top are marked
with various letters and symbols.
