概要
The Faculty of Environmental and Symbiotic Sciences offers Basic English I (BE I) to its first-year students. BE I will focus on building students' communication skills, including learning basic vocabulary, speaking and listening, but also reading and writing. Class time will be student-centered, and students will be expected to use English in the classroom. Homework will include preparation for class time and activities to enhance students' personal learning.

In pairs and small groups, Basic English Ie uses interesting and lively activities to enhance students’ communicative competency. Students will actively practice their spoken and written communication using a variety of familiar topics.

The Basic English 1e 食 class will focus on improving the student’s basic English ability in a fun and educational way over the course of the semester. There will be some guided listening as well as reading aloud in class. Paired activities will be the main mode of interaction, although there will be some group activities as well.

Basic English I (BE I) builds on first-year students' high school English abilities. BE I will help students improve their vocabulary, especially the most frequent words they will meet in English. Students will communicate in English with their classmates and teachers. Students will also have opportunities to improve their reading skills. Students completing BE I will have the ability to communicate with anyone about simple personal topics in English.

Students should be able to use and learn from information gap activities, interviews, and task-based exercises to improve their overall communication in the four skills. They should be able to: Accurately describe things and places; report on past and present events; listen, take notes, and relay information; get an improved score on the TOEIC test; read orally in class; and accurately choose correct answers in listening.

1. To accurately describe such things as places, people and things, and to report on past, present and future events or activities without relying exclusively on memorized responses to get meaning across.
2. To be able to create grammatically correct questions on a number of topics in English.
履修上の注意
<Morrow>
Students are responsible for coming to class on time, participating in class activities with the teacher and other students, and completing assignments independently. Students must come speak in English in class, complete all homework assignments in timely manner, and participate actively during in-class activities.

Students are required to do all in class assignments and attendance is mandatory.

Students will be told about the upcoming topic of the next class at the end of each class. The students will discuss the upcoming topic in pairs while taking notes of what their partner said. Frequent quizzes will ensure that material has been understood. The next class will begin with a review of the previous lesson and include and introduction of the topic of the day.


<Cairns>
Students will have daily vocabulary work as outlined in the class orientation. It is expected that students will carry out this work without fail. Also, it is important that students review previously corrected classroom work. It is also recommended that students make time to listen to English music and watch English speaking movies to greater extend their understanding of the language and culture.

In order to pass this class, students must show satisfactory progress during in-class projects (30%). Students must also complete and submit all homework by the deadline assigned and pass all quizzes (20%). Finally, they must receive passing grades on the midterm and final examinations (50%).


<Cairns>
Students will be judged on their ability to conduct extended conversations in English; this includes the ability to respond to their partner's questions and use extenders such as because, and, so, and but. They must also stay in the target language during oral activities and apply those terms to real conversation. Students must pass vocabulary quizzes (25%), adequately participate in question building work (25%), pass the final oral examination (25%), and pass the final written examination (25%).
成績評価基準
In this class, students must show significant improvement in their vocabulary. They must also be able to communicative effectively in English with classmates and teachers. In addition, students must show marked improvement in their reading skills, and have the obvious ability to communicate with anyone about simple personal topics in English.
In addition, in both teachers’ classes students must show marked improvement in: accurately narrating and describing such things as places, people, things; reporting on past, present, and future events; listening and responding to groups discussions; creating grammatically correct questions; being able to read well orally; and choosing correct responses to guided listening exercises.
