|The purpose of English 1 and 2 is to help students improve their English speaking skills.|
|By taking English 1 and 2, they are expected to improve their speaking abilities in English.|
|This is not a passive programme. The students are expected to actively participate in all the assignments in order to gain the most from this coursework. English will be the language of the classroom. The instructor will use English only in the classroom. Students will listen to and speak English with each other in pairs, and from time to time with other class members in small groups. This is an opportunity to use, practise, and improve your English speaking skills. Students are expected to come to class regularly and on time. Students must attend at least two thirds of all scheduled class meetings in order to take the examinations and qualify for a pass grade. However the instructor strongly recommends attendance at each and every class to improve more significantly. If students miss a class, it is their responsibility to confer with classmates to determine what they have missed. If students have any questions about the class, they should ask their instructor during or after class time.|
|There are ample non-threatening activities that will enable students of all levels to converse readily with their classmates. The textbook covers a number of topics from university life, Japanese culture, hobbies, to work related material. The instructor will act as a facilitator interacting to correct, assist and guide students as necessary. Most of the semester grade score will come from the instructor's evaluation of the student class participation and effort. Effort for this class can be described as using English only whilst attending class, active participation in the assignments given by the instructor, having all necessary materials for each class, and having a willingness to improve ones level of competence. The format of the class will be a pair-work scenario in which students discuss, ask questions, give answers, and share opinions with each other and sometimes in small groups, as dictated by the needs of the activity undertaken.|
Please note that there are two textbooks for the full year of coursework. We will use one textbook for the first semester and another, different textbook for the second semester. This will give the students a wider range of speaking opportunities, conversational, and discussion styles.

|I ask the students to be prepared by being aware of the basics of English conversation guidelines, which will be taught in the class, basic grammatical structure, and also to place their mental attitudes in an English listening/speaking mind-frame when in the class. Assistance will be given to the students on how to achieve this. With reference to the revision of study and work completed in the class, I encourage the students to utilize any new vocabulary, content, expressions, idioms, and phrases in other English classes they have, in their homework, and the journals that they keep. By doing this, the new material will have the opportunity to relocate from the temporary memory to the long term memory of the brain and thereby provide more lasting cohesion and recall.|

Additional supplementary material will be handed out from time to time by the instructor for the purpose of
reinforcing the students understanding of important topics, vocabulary, common speaking rules, and common mistakes made by learners of second languages.
|A good dictionary(English-Japanese/Japanese-English) will be required so that the students can appreciate the nuance, meaning and substance of new vocabulary. Please ensure that you bring your textbooks and other materials to each class.|
|The final grades will be determined using the following criteria:|
Active class participation and effort 35%.
Satisfactory completion of class and other assignments 35%.
Final examination 30%.
|Students are to be evaluated on the basis of whether they are able to communicate in simple English in familiar situations. Also the basis for evaluation is how well the students have achieved the course goals. This is to be determined by assessment of work performed during the semester and examination. Furthermore the extent to which improvement has been made during the semester will be a factor in the final grade.|
