We begin our multi-part look at comedy, starting with a look at the British series of the late 60s and early 70s, Monty Python's Flying Circus
Monty Python
This TV series is often considered to be the beginning of modern British comedy. Though it's now 30 years old, I find it just as funny as ever.
Though the series wasn't that long, countless repeats and movies from the Monty Python team (such as Jabberwocky; Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail; and the Life of Brian: you can get at least The Life of Brian at Sunhome or AV Tsutaya video stores) ensured that their influence was felt long after the original series had finished.
Two of Monty Python's stars have had an eventful career through to this day. John Cleese starred in the TV series Fawlty Towers and the movies A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. Terry Gilliam has directed the critically acclaimed movies Brazil and Twelve Monkeys.
Why is Monty Python so funny?
- It makes fun of all aspects of British life.
- The characters look funny and there's plenty of slapstick.
- It makes us think about social problems.
