English Readers

Take a look at some of the available readers to get some ideas. Many are available in the PUK library on the 3rd floor, usually in sections around 428~.

Below Level One

We think of Oxford Bookworms Stage 1 and Cambridge English Readers Level 1 as standard, basic readers. By the second semester of your first year, you should be able to read these books quite easily.

But it is usually better for students to read easier books at first. These can be graded readers (these are often called Starters) or they can be books written for children in English-speaking countries.

The sentences in these books are usually shorter, and often there are pictures, too. Some are even in "manga" format. Because they are easier to read, you can learn to read faster, and this can help you when you start reading Level One books. In fact, even when you are regularly reading Level One (or Two, Three, Four…) books, you should sometimes read these easy books to maintain your reading speed. After reading a few more difficult books, you may be surprised how fast and easily you can read!
