Summary: This is one of the best-selling children`s science books for good reasons. My youngest loves the stories and pictures, and the eldest is able to enjoy the educational elements, as well. The story-text, at once humorous, engaging, and packed with information, is complemented by lively pictures, supplemented by cartoon bubbles containing thoughts and comments, and short "reports" from the students in the story. Ms Frizzle is a Poppins-like teacher with pizzazz, who challenges her students and leads them on unbelievable fieldtrips. Her equally fascinating wardrobe changes with the subject and situation.
IN THE TIME OF THE DINOSAURS is about fossils, dinosaurs, and their contemporaries. Obviously too much to cover thoroughly, but this is a good place to start. The kids meet a real paleontologist at a dig. Then the bus turns into a time machine. A colorful time chart of the eras and the final class display help us with the big picture. My sons come up with even more questions, and I give credit to Ms Cole, Mr Degen and Scholastic for answering them and encouraging them.
