Hundreds of suitable readers are available, so you have a
wide choice and everyone can find something they like.
Start by
taking a look at some of the
readers to see the available variety. Most of these
are available in the PUK library on the 3rd floor,
usually in
洋書 sections around 428~, though there
are a few in the
和書 section, and also a few in the
first row of the
洋書 section. There are also a few books
with CDs and cassettes in the Language Center Tape Library.
A Level One book (i.e. Oxford Bookworms Stage 1, or
Cambridge English Readers Level 1) is considered the basic
graded reader for readers without so much experience. All
students should read at least 10 of these (though a few
advanced students may find these too easy and want to move
up to Level 2 or 3 immediately). After this it should be
quite easy to move up to Level 2, and then gradually up to
Level 6 before graduating.
Because most high school students have little experience of
reading whole books in English, most students find that
they are quite slow, and some students find the Level One
books a little difficult to finish within an hour.
Therefore, I recommend that most students start by reading
extremely easy books, Below Level One. It is possible to
read these in a very short time (maybe 5-15 minutes), and
this helps you to read faster. The important thing with
these very easy books is to read many of them (I suggest 5
or more a week).
Because there are so many Below Level One books, you could
spend most of your first semester reading these, trying to
get your speed up to around 130 words per minute. This will
help you when you move up to Level One.
The
Lists page shows some albums with
details of many books in different categories.
