Summary: My son finds this book fascinating and it spurs many new questions every time we read it. The text gives just enough specifics to make learning about the ocean interesting without overburdening young readers with detail. It doesn't try to ignore the fact that our oceans are suffering from pollution, yet it doesn't get weighed down with a negative tone.

Summary: 掲載された物語は、それぞれ年代がバラバラで、ゲド自身が関わる物、そうでない物がある。
読む順番とすれば、五巻の前に読めば、五巻の理解がスムーズにできたのではないかと思う。特に、「トンボ」でそれを感じた。
四巻以降、魔法の力が全てではない、普通の人間の世界に戻ってきた感があり、この中編集も、絶対的な権力たる魔法よりも、人間同士の信頼、情愛が軸にある。
著者自身の解説も丁寧で、アースシーの理解に役立つ。
まだまだ隠された物語がたくさんありそうな気になる解説だったのだが、ル・グウィン女史はもう、筆を置いてしまったのでしょうね。
ならば、この味わい深い物語を読み返し、また、一巻からじっくりと読んでみたい。

一巻は主人公であるゲドの成長が描かれましたが、こちらはゲドとは違う国に住む、違う人種の女の子の成長が描かれています。
決められた道、決められた運命、幼い頃からその心も体も縛り付けられていたアルハは一人の魔法使いと出会い、テナーとして生きる事を決意する。
しかし決意には困惑と苦痛が伴います。
一巻に比べ、当たり前と言えば当たり前ですが、心理描写が多いです。
テナーの心が、地下の暗黒の中で火のように動き回ります。
広い世界へと出たテナーの姿は、四巻の「帰還」で見る事ができます。
ここまで読んだら、続きを読むしかないでしょう！

Summary: ゲドにとって、第１巻が誕生の物語で、第２巻が成熟の物語であるなら、本書は老年と死の物語である。生と死、若者と老人、純粋と不純、ハレとケガレ、ファンタジーと現実、いろいろなものが対で語られる。実は、対で存在するものは他方がなければ自分も存在しない。自分の対になるものが、空気がぬけるように、川がせきとめられるように、力を失ってしまったとき、ここにかかれているように自分自身もリアリティーを喪失してしまうのかもしれない。人間の根本にある力をフィーリングに過ぎないとはいえ、直に感じさせてくれるというのもファンタジーの力なのかもしれない。人間の根源を見極め、自分の中の「対」のバランスを取るのが成熟ということなのかもしれない。
